Marina Abramović, residency April to September 2001
Marina Abramovic was born in Belgrade in 1946, she lives and works in New York.
From the 1970s, she made her first performances, working with her own body, pushing artistic expression to the limits of pain and psychological resistance.
From 1976 to 1988, Marina Abramovic's name is associated with that of Ulay with whom she performs sometimes spectacular performances.
In recent art history, few people have given themselves to the public with such generosity and freedom, always with the same coherence and rigour. She received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1997.
At Atelier Calder, the artist has made a video, and a series of photographs and performances as part of her Energy Clothes project, in which she uses not her own body but that of the spectators who had to wear accessories in which magnets were inserted.
For their use, the spectators had to respect the artist's precise instructions, the idea being to ritualise all the daily actions: drinking, eating, sitting, sleeping... The presence of magnets in the clothes transforms the spectators into "transitory objects" capable of emitting and receiving energy flows.
